Coldest City in America

Over 50 years - the Fairbanks Rescue Mission has been here to help those in need - in the Coldest City in America.

The cold temperatures in a Fairbanks winter can create fear, injury and sometimes death for the unsheltered and displaced.

Concern for the Homeless

We here at the Fairbanks Rescue Mission have a more than average concern for the temporary homeless or unsheltered. A fear of severe frostbite or even loss of limbs due to cold is something we see every winter. In a 2018 article in Statistica by Niall McCarthy, Fairbanks was listed as the “Coldest City in America”. So far in my research this still stands. For those of us who were born and raised in this environment, this statistic seems shocking, but in second thought, not so surprising. Many of us have memories of the “cold that bites”, and also memories of loved ones or friends who might have perished or lost limbs because of it.
